Soybean Aphid
Soybean aphid risks are in the Moderate category across the eastern Dakotas, much of Minnesota, and far northern Iowa for the next week, with Low risks from the central Dakotas into far northeast Nebraska, northern Iowa, extreme northwest Illinois, Wisconsin, and further east into central and eastern lower Michigan as well as into southern Ontario, Canada. Some fields are now moving past critical growth stages (R5.5-R6) where soybean aphids still pose a yield risk, but many fields are still in the R4-R5 stage so we need to maintain the Moderate risk, especially with more favorable (cooler and drier) weather for population increases in the Moderate risk area expected in the next week or so. Growers should scout individual fields regularly and note changes in populations. Soybean aphid populations can and do vary considerably even across adjacent fields so field-level scouting is needed to prevent excess treatments, if warranted.
