Soybean aphid populations may increase in some areas of the northern soybean-growing region in the next week, especially where temperatures are expected to be a little cooler. Heat is expected to remain over the western portion of the region, and as a result Low risks were maintained as this environment is less conducive for populations to increase. Further east, however, especially from southeast Minnesota, northeast Iowa, and into Wisconsin, temperatures are expected to be a little cooler and winds also lighter, so soybean aphid populations may increase and the need for a Moderate risk seems justified across this region for the next week. Low risks continue further east in lower Michigan and southern Ontario, Canada, as well. Growers are encouraged to regularly scout fields as we move through critical reproductive stages for this year’s soybean crop, and now is the time when soybean aphid populations, if high enough and left untreated where treatment is warranted, can result in yield loss. Any treatment decisions should be based on established thresholds and trends, and also at the field level as soybean aphid populations can and do vary considerably from field to field.
