Western Bean Cutworm
Western bean cutworms continue to pose a risk to crops especially across portions of Nebraska, northern and central Wisconsin, lower Michigan, far northern Indiana and northwest Ohio, and into southern Ontario, Canada where Moderate risks remain in place. Growers with crops at susceptible stages to damage from western bean cutworms need to continue to regularly scout crops especially where the annual moth flight is still peaking or ongoing. Trap captures have begun to drop off in portions of central and southern Nebraska as well as in southern Wisconsin, Indiana, and Ohio, but remain respectable in central/northern Wisconsin, portions of lower Michigan, and into Ontario, Canada. If treatment is needed based on local field scouting, timing is critical with this insect in order to protect yield. Even in the fringe areas where the moth flight is subsiding, there may still be fields at a vulnerable stage and where egg laying/larvae present is likely so scouting should continue until the crop is past critical growth stages or where pressure is no longer present.
