Alert Details

The annual western bean cutworm moth flight is beginning to subside in many areas outside of the eastern Great Lakes region, thus Moderate risks in the Plains and also into Wisconsin have been removed from the forecast. Additionally, Moderate risks across the southern Great Lakes region (northern Indiana, Ohio, southern lower Michigan) have also been excluded as moth captures have declined in these areas and crop stage is now beginning to advance far enough along in most fields that the risk is becoming more isolated. Nonetheless, peak flight is ongoing from northern lower Michigan east into southeast Ontario and Quebec, Canada, and Moderate risks continue in these areas especially in corn and dry bean fields. Moderate risks will focus in these areas into next week, but will likely begin subsiding by the first of the month. Growers with crops at susceptible stages to damage should continue monitoring traps and scouting fields as treatment application timing is critical with western bean cutworm, and the lack of a regular scouting program may impact yields in the long run.
