Alert Details

Western bean cutworm moth flights continue in the usual “hot spot” areas for this particular insect. High risks remain in the forecast mainly across Nebraska where the flight continues, but further south in extreme southern Nebraska and likely adjacent areas of northern Kansas, the flight has begun to subside somewhat. Moderate risks remain across northern Kansas into much of Nebraska not already in the High risk as well as northeast and eastern portions of Colorado. Additional Moderate risks remain in the forecast across the Great Lakes region from northern Indiana and Ohio into lower Michigan and also into southern Ontario, Canada. More isolated western bean cutworm issues may be found as far north as South Dakota and into western Iowa, and across Wisconsin and the remaining portion of the Great Lakes region not already in the Moderate risk. Growers located in or near a risk area are strongly encouraged to scout regularly as the treatment window for western bean cutworms is pretty narrow, and once the insects are down into the host plant far enough, treatment is largely worthless and control is very difficult.
