Alert Details

Western bean cutworm moths continue to be captured in the usual “hot spot” areas for this particular insect, and egg laying/larvae emergence is likely to continue although it does appear that the primary focus is now beginning to shift to the Great Lakes area as crop stage elsewhere is becoming more advanced and less suitable for western bean cutworm egg laying especially in favored early tasseling fields which are less numerous except in the latest planted fields now. The High risk previously in Nebraska has been downgraded to a Moderate risk given crop stage and trap counts overall showing a decrease in the annual moth flight. Moderate risks are also found in northeast Colorado as well as into Wisconsin where counts are still present but also showing a decrease, and then further east into lower Michigan, far northern Indiana and northwest Ohio, and then northeast into southern Ontario and southwest Quebec, Canada. Low risks for more isolated potential issues extend into Kansas, South Dakota, Minnesota, Iowa, Missouri, and then in surrounding areas of the Great Lakes states not already in a Moderate risk. Growers with crops at susceptible stages to western bean cutworm damage should continue trapping and scouting efforts until the crop is past critical growth stages.
