Western Bean Cutworm
Western bean cutworm risks are beginning to wind down for this growing season, but some lingering issues may still be found especially in the Great Lakes area where crops are less advanced and the annual moth flight occurred a little later than further south and west. Moderate risks remain in the forecast for the next week across central and eastern lower Michigan east into southern Ontario and southwest Quebec provinces in Canada, but no additional elevated risks are found in the United States now due to a more advanced crop and peak flight/subsequent egg laying having already passed. Low risks for more isolated issues remain in northeast Colorado, western Nebraska, and far northwest Kansas as well as in Wisconsin, far northern Indiana and Ohio, and into southern lower Michigan. Growers in or near the risk areas should continue regular field scouting until the crop either moves past critical growth stages and/or moth activity/egg laying subsides which will likely not be more than a week or two in most areas.
