Western Bean Cutworm
Western bean cutworm moth emergence is expected to increase in the coming days, with Moderate risks in place initially this week across portions of Nebraska and Kansas and Low risks across these same states in addition to far northeast Colorado and then across the Great Lakes from central Indiana and Ohio northward into southern lower Michigan, southwest Ontario, Canada, and also into far northern Illinois and Wisconsin. As the flight increases in response to greater growing degree day accumulations, additional Moderate risks are in the forecast later this week across Indiana, Ohio, and southern lower Michigan as well as into central Wisconsin. Growers in or near any risk level should already be monitoring traps but also be prepared to begin regular scouting efforts as the treatment window for western bean cutworms is somewhat narrow to prevent significant yield loss.
