Western Bean Cutworm
Western bean cutworm moth captures continue to increase in many areas where this insect is usually an issue, especially in the central Plains and the Great Lakes. High risks remain in the forecast across far northern Kansas into southwest and southern Nebraska, with Moderate risks across these same states as well as further west into northeast Colorado. Additional Moderate risks are found across Wisconsin as well as further east into northern Indiana, northern Ohio, lower Michigan, and east into southern Ontario, Canada. More isolated risks are possible in these same states outside of the elevated risk areas as well as into far northern and eastern Illinois and the southwestern UP of Michigan. Given a relatively short treatment window in terms of effectiveness with western bean cutworm, growers are advised to regularly monitor traps and scout fields now that we are entering or already in peak flight for this insect, with egg-laying becoming increasingly common especially given a favorable crop stage in many areas on multiple hosts, as well.
