Western Bean Cutworm
The annual western bean cutworm moth flight has just begun or will very soon, in the usual “hot spot” areas for this particular insect in the corn-growing region. Moderate risks for an increase in moth presence now being observed in some areas and also a more advanced crop, is now in place across far northern Kansas into southern Nebraska in the next week. Low risks are found in these two states in all directions from the Moderate risk area, as well as into the Great Lakes region where moths are also just emerging. Only Low risks are found in the Great Lakes region from Wisconsin into Indiana, Ohio, and southern lower Michigan as the crop is generally further behind due to lower heat unit accumulations and crop stages in this area, but growers should be preparing for an increase in the flight and also concerns over egg-laying in newly-tasseled crops in the coming week or two. Elevated risks will follow soon in the Great Lakes, region, also, in the coming weeks. Timing is critical to help control western bean cutworms, and growers should begin preparations now for the annual flight of this particular insect.
