Western Bean Cutworm
Western bean cutworm moths will continue to emerge in the usual “hot spot” areas for this particular insect, notably in the central Plains region and also further east into the Great Lakes. High risks continue across southern Nebraska and far northern Kansas where peak flight has already or will be shortly occurring, and also where the highest percentage of crops are at critical growth stages. Moderate risks are found around the High risk in these same states as well as into far northeast Colorado. More isolated issues may be found as far north as far southern South Dakota, western Iowa, and far northwest Missouri, as well, in the coming week or so. Further east, Moderate risks for an increase in moth captures but better chances for egg-laying in early tasseling corn exist across northern Indiana and Ohio and into southern lower Michigan as well as in southern to central Wisconsin and southern Ontario, Canada. A higher percentage of the crop is now entering into critical growth stages in this area, warranting the inclusion of an elevated, yet scattered, risk as problems are generally not expected to be widespread in this region. Growers should not only monitor traps but scout fields as the timing of any needed western bean cutworm treatments is critical to be most effective.
