Alert Details

The annual western bean cutworm moth flight is now underway with trap captures increasing in the usual hot spot areas for this particular insect. Some fields are not at susceptible stages to damage as of yet, but we are including additional areas in the risk so preparations can be made given the sensitivity of treatments to provide effective control for this particular insect. In the central Plains, more advanced fields and higher flight captures warrant a Moderate risk across far northern Kansas into southern Nebraska with Low risks extending from northeast Colorado into northern Kansas and additional areas of adjacent central and southern Nebraska. Low risks have also been hoisted in Wisconsin as well as in northern Indiana, northwest Ohio, and southern lower Michigan where the flight is commencing, but also where a smaller percentage of the crop is at a susceptible stage to damage. Growers are encouraged to set and monitor traps and also each field’s growth stage so any need for treatment is timed correctly for most effectiveness.
