As the annual western bean cutworm moth flight intensifies and a greater percentage of this year’s corn crop begins to reach near tasseling/silking, additional elevated risks for this particular insect are warranted. Moderate risks continue across portions of northern Kansas into Nebraska and a small part of far northeast Colorado where the flight is currently considered the most intense in terms of trap captures. Additional Moderate risks, however, have been introduced to the forecast across the sandier soils in central Wisconsin and also further east in far northern Indiana, northwest Ohio, and into southern lower Michigan. Given the sensitivity of treatment timing with this particular insect, regular field-level scouting will be necessary for most effective treatments in areas where western bean cutworms are presently being observed. Some areas in or near the risk areas may or may not see moth and larvae pressure, so individual field level scouting is recommended especially in those fields at most risk of seeing infestation based on crop stage.
