Western bean cutworm moth captures continued to climb in many areas, with peak flight now likely occurring across portions of the central Plains. High western bean cutworm risks have been introduced to the forecast across portions of southern Nebraska where peak flight is now coinciding with a higher percentage of the corn crop now at a critical growth stage and where regular scouting and treatment timing will be crucial to keeping this insect controlled in those fields seeing pressure. Moderate risks surround the High risk area in northern Kansas and across a large portion of Nebraska and also into northeast Colorado. We have also introduced some isolated Low risks across surrounding these states (South Dakota, Minnesota, Iowa, and Missouri) as there could be some isolated areas that at least see moth captures or perhaps very isolated pressure in the next several weeks. Further east, across the Great Lakes region, additional Moderate risks are predicted in Wisconsin, northern Indiana, northwest Ohio, and into southern/central lower Michigan and east into southern Ontario, Canada where additional moth captures and a higher percentage of both field and fresh market/processing and dry bean crops are either in or near critical growth stages. Moth captures are also occurring in these areas, so continued monitoring and timely decision making will continue to be needed in the next several weeks as we move through this year’s annual moth flight.
