The annual western bean cutworm moth flight continues in the usual areas where this particular insect is prevalent, with peak flight now commenced or nearly so especially across portions of the central Plains states in far northern Kansas into extreme southern and southwest Nebraska while peak flight further east will be occurring very soon (in the next few weeks). High risks remain in place across southern Nebraska where greatest pressure and favorable crop stages remain in place, with Moderate risks in surrounding areas of northeast Colorado, far northern Kansas, and into much of the remainder of Nebraska except for far northern and eastern areas of the state where pressure is usually less. Low risks extend north and east into South Dakota, Minnesota, Iowa, and Missouri where some isolated occurrences of this insect may be found but generally should not be an issue. Further east in the Great Lakes region, Moderate risks remain in place across Wisconsin, northern Indiana and Ohio, lower Michigan, and east into southern Ontario, Canada where a greater percentage of crops will be at risk in the coming week, and also as peak flight occurs or begins to conclude in this region especially in southern reaches of the Moderate risk areas. Growers should regularly scout vulnerable fields as treatment timing and effectiveness is critical with this insect to prevent damage and yield loss.
