Western bean cutworm moths and subsequent egg-laying/hatching concerns linger in the usual hot spot areas for this particular insect as it moves through its annual flight. There are signs, however, that the flight is already subsiding especially in the Plains states, but there is also still a decent percentage of the crop in this area still at a susceptible stage to damage from this insect given crop stage. For these reasons, the High risk area was maintained despite lower moth captures especially across portions of central and southern Nebraska. Moderate risks surround the High risk in much of Nebraska and far northeast Colorado, but the Moderate risk was removed from northern Kansas this week. Much more isolated problems may also be observed in surrounding portions of South Dakota, Minnesota, Iowa, and Missouri. Further east, across the Great Lakes region, Moderate risks continue as peak flight is occurring, especially across Wisconsin, far northern Indiana, northwest Ohio, lower Michigan, and further east into Ontario, Canada. Regular scouting is recommended as treatment timing is critical for most effective control of this insect, and growers should also look for egg masses on leaves as signs of the presence of western bean cutworms in or near areas where this insect is typically present or observed.
