This growing season’s annual western bean cutworm moth flight is now winding down in many areas except perhaps in the eastern Great Lakes and into Canada. Crop stage in southern reaches of where this particular insect is usually present is advancing past critical growth stages and we are already reducing risks across the central Plains as a result of these two factors. Moderate risks do remain across a portion of western and central Nebraska for the next week with Low risks from far northeast Colorado and northern Kansas east as far as southeast South Dakota, southwest Minnesota, western Iowa, and extreme northwest Missouri, but conditions will probably not warrant an elevated risk in the Plains past this week. Further east, in the Great Lakes, Moderate risks are also on the decline in this region, with only northern Wisconsin and central/eastern lower Michigan and east into southern Ontario and extreme southwest Quebec, Canada included in the elevated risk for the next week. Overall, the threat for this insect is beginning to wane this year, but growers should still pay close attention to where larvae are present as potential areas of concern for next year’s crop.
