Western Bean Cutworm
Western bean cutworm moths will continue to become more active and increase in populations in the usual “hot spots” of the corn-growing region through the next week into next weekend. Where corn is silking and populations are now at levels where egg laying is occurring or likely is occurring, Moderate risks are in the forecast across far northern Kansas into Nebraska as well as far northern Indiana, extreme northwest Ohio, and southwest lower Michigan. Low risks continue across Kansas into Nebraska and also into Wisconsin, far northeast Illinois, northern and central Indiana, northern Ohio, central and southern lower Michigan, and also into southwest Ontario, Canada where trap counts are on the increase in some fields. Growers located within the risk areas should begin or continue to monitor traps and also check leaves for newly-laid egg masses where moth captures are particularly higher.
