Western bean cutworm development and potential migration risks should remain greatest in the Great Lakes region and also a portion of mainly northeastern Nebraska in the week ahead. As is typical with the annual flight around this time of year, the primary risk is shifting into lower Michigan and also southern Ontario, Canada as crops further to the south are advancing in growth and heat unit accumulation. Moderate risks continue in the forecast mainly across northeast Nebraska for this week, but are expected to lessen by next week. Moderate risks remain in the forecast across northern Indiana, northern Ohio, lower Michigan, and into southern Ontario, Canada for this week, with risks focusing more across southern and central lower Michigan east into southern Ontario, Canada by late week. Low risks extend into western Iowa, southern South Dakota, and southwest Minnesota with the Plains risk and from Wisconsin into far northeast Illinois and points east and northeast into the Great Lakes region throughout this week and into next weekend. Growers located in especially the Moderate risk areas should monitor trap counts as well as scout for egg masses on the undersides of leaves.
