Western Bean Cutworm
The annual western bean cutworm moth flight is intensifying and as both fresh market/sweet corn and field corn enter critical growth stages, it will be important for regular scouting and trap monitoring to take place in areas where this insect has had a history of problems. Moderate risks are in place across far north central Kansas into southern Nebraska and also across northern Indiana into far southwest Michigan where the flight has already begun in earnest in several locations with continued increases in moth counts likely in the week ahead. Low risks are also found across a good portion of Nebraska into northern Kansas as well as southern South Dakota, Wisconsin, lower Michigan, northwest Ohio, and into southern Ontario, Canada this week. Growers are encouraged to monitor traps and scout fields for new egg masses and potential larvae.
