Alert Details

The annual western bean cutworm moth flight continues, but is now shifting north as heat units continue to accumulate and the crop progresses further to the south. Moderate risks remain in “hot spot” locations again this week, notably across Nebraska and also in the Great Lakes, including northern Indiana, far northwest Ohio, much of lower Michigan, and into southern Ontario, Canada. Low risks for more isolated potential issues is found across far northeast Colorado, southern South Dakota, far northern Kansas, southwest Minnesota, western Iowa, Wisconsin, far northern Illinois, and further east into the remainder of the Great Lakes region in the United States and also extending as far northeast as southwestern Quebec, Canada. The peak flight areas are shifting further north across Nebraska and also into lower Michigan and southern Ontario, Canada, so the risk areas are being reduced on the southern end at this point. Growers in the elevated risk areas especially should monitor susceptible plants and traps, and continue to look for egg masses as well as fresh hatches/potential larvae and associated feeding damage until the threat passes over the next few weeks.
